A new chapter: ALS joins the Sartorius family
Sartorius AG, headquartered in Goettingen, Germany, is expanding its bioanalytics portfolio by acquiring a majority stake in ALS Automated Lab Solutions GmbH as of January 03, 2022.
The combination with Sartorius will enable ALS to accelerate new developments and complement the existing product portfolio with additional consumables, reagent kits and protocols, as well as strengthen local support for customers. ALS GmbH thus takes a significant step forward from being a manufacturer of laboratory systems to a provider of complete end-to-end solutions.
The Sartorius Group is a leading international partner of life science research and the biopharmaceutical industry. With innovative laboratory instruments and consumables, the Group’s Lab Products & Services Division concentrates on serving the needs of laboratories performing research and quality control at pharma and biopharma companies and those of academic research institutes. The Bioprocess Solutions Division with its broad product portfolio focusing on single-use solutions helps customers to manufacture biotech medications and vaccines safely and efficiently. At the end of 2020, nearly 11,000 people were employed at the Group’s approximately 60 manufacturing and sales sites.

The new CellCelector™ Flex is now on the market
The next generation of the ALS CellCelector™ , the CellCelector™ Flex, offers many new and improved features that open up new application fields for the user and even further simplifies the process of cell identification and isolation.
The completely new microscope optics has been fully automated. Changing between objectives, switching from bright field to phase contrast or fluorescence as well as switching between different fluorescence colors is now entirely software-controlled. The image quality, in particular of the fluorescence images, was once again significantly improved.
The new motorized stage is characterized by an even higher precision leading to unrivaled stitching accuracy and ensuring best possible screening and picking results. The new hardware design makes changing samples easier than ever. Finally the speed of the entire scanning and picking process has been significantly increased.

Next-generation nanowell array available now:
Capture, detect and recover single cells in SIEVEWELL™ without cell loss
We are pleased to introduce TOK SIEVEWELL™ , a next-generation nanowell array for rare single cell isolation approaches.
The key component of SIEVEWELL™ is a thin membrane with nanowell structures fabricated by photolithography. On an area of 17 mm x 17 mm, 370,000 nanowells with dimensions of 20 µm x 25 µm (width x depth) can be found.
Each nanowell connects the fluid volume above and below it by two 2 µm pores at its bottom. This pore size is suitable for fluid exchange but will prevent cell passage. The fluid volume below the nanowells is connected to two side ports by a micro gap. Through this a one-directional fluid flow from the inner chamber holding the cells to the side ports can be generated by aspiration with a pipette at the side ports.
Applying a biological sample cells will follow the liquid flow and are trapped in the nanowells. As each cell partially blocks the pores and therefore reduces liquid flow through the corresponding nanowell upon entering the next cell will be drawn in another nanowell resulting in a self-sorting single cell capture. Following cell loading on-chip staining can be performed without any cell loss during fixation, permeabilization, blocking, incubation and washing. As such the device is highly suitable for staining of rare cells like circulating tumor cells, fetal cells etc.
SIEVEWELL™ with 20 µm nanowells with 2 pores
The SIEVEWELL™ membrane is characterized by high transparency during bright field microscopy as well as very low auto-fluorescence allowing for acquisition of high-quality microscopic imaging data. The chip size supports fast, automated scanning of the cell capture area and identified target cells can be specifically retrieved at single cell level in 100% purity using the ALS CellCelector™ technology.
